Questions and formulates task: Identify information need. Understand external expectations and decide on personal expression.

Examples:"I have to make a circuit board." Select a topic and style for circuit board.

"I have to do a report on butterflies." Select a butterfly species for study.

Activities librarians can do: Create displays that model the process. Display possible materials to consider for current project.

Constructs information seeking strategies: Identify type of information needed. Child aware of different information sources (books on topic, encyclopedias, audiovisual, experts, computer).

Examples: Circuit board: decide on topic - need a list of the planets and their symbols. Information on construction of circuit board.

butterfly report: Create a list of information needed (life cycle, habitat)

Activities librarians can do: Develop collection of materials on topics of interest to children. Be sure collection includes information on how to complete a project. Brush up on your reference interview skills.

Locates and accesses information: Selects books, DVDs, and electronic resources to explore. Select expert to interview.

Examples: Go to library and collect materials. Request assistance as needed.

Activities librarians can do: Clearly label library collection to support independent information sekking behavior. Maintain organized collection and accurate catalog. Be nice. It doesn't matter if this is the 50th child making a volcano.

Walk children and parents to shelves. Demonstrate information seeking behavior ( use catalog, talk through process, show index, etc).

Offer workshops/classes to students and parents.

Evaluates and manages information relative to need: Take notes. Seek additional information.

Examples: Circuit board example: as child reads, makes a list of planets and their symbols. Look for new information sources when planet symbol not found in review of information sources at hand.

Butterfly report: Review list of needed information and make changes as indicated by inofmration learned. (Picture of butterfly, what does this butterfly eat).

Activities librarians can do: Have paper and pencils available for note taking. Be available to students who have additional informational needs.

Synthesizes information: Outline final report/ draw model of project.

Examples: circuit board: draw model for final project ... where the planet list goes, symbol list, order, etc.

butterfly report: written outline and list of images.

Activities librarians can do: Have paper, pencil and place to work available to students. Be available for consultation. Include how-to research materials in collection.

Applies information responsibly: Write your own report. Give credit to information sources.

Examples: Circuit board is built/ report is written, not copied. Child works independently unless assigned a group project.

Activities librarians can do: Have information about bibliographies available. Model appropriate behavior (" write down the name this book on the back of your photocopy.")

Evaluates process: Proof read final project. Make adjustments as needed.

Examples: Is information accurate (check notes). Have I answered my origianl question? (Does circuit board light up properly?)

Activities librarians can do: Proof read all library materials for accuracy, spelling, etc. Assist students as requested ("Will you read this for me?")as time allows. Encourage student to report on final outcome of project.
